i need your help.

It's true. I need your help. And desperately.

For all you bloggers out there (or photographers), how do you take your self-portraits?

Do you have force your significant other to take the photo?

Do you set it on self-timer?

Do you use a shutter release button/remote? If so, do you have any recommendations?

Do you use the mirror (like I obviously do way too often)?

Or do you just take photos of your feet/shoes?

We all know that's the easy way to take a self-portrait.

But really, I could use some advice/input/help. I'm getting a little tired of taking photos with my camera in my face and I feel so, so awkward asking my family to do it for me. Mostly because I just can't pose in front other people (obviously). So help a poor girl out, pretty please!

And if your answer is the Myspace-hold-the-camera-an-arm's-length-away, I'm sorry but I just can't pull that one off. I just can't.

Happy Monday, friends! How was your weekend? Did you watch the Oscars last night? My mom, sister, and I have the tradition of watching them before we watch any of the movies. We're weird, but it gives us an idea of what movies we need to watch. Like, um, Les Miserables, Lincoln, Silver Linings Playbook, and Wreck-It Ralph. Did I forget anything?

  1. I know, I totally hate taking self portraits. A Beautiful Mess and Elise Blaha both have good tips for self portraits and photography in general, might want to check them out. If I ever do a self-portrait, I just set the self-timer and take pictures until i don't look weird :)

    1. I'm definitely going to have to re-read their posts! Both of their blogs are definitely great sources for photography and DIY projects! And I also need to get comfortable with that self-timer. I know what photography project is in my future! :)

  2. I take a lot of them myself....most of them are only waist up because i'm just using my own arms ha. I had a craaapppp tripod and i need to get a new one, that is what i would suggest, a good tripod and a remote! <3

    1. I'm definitely going to have to research remotes. I've heard they aren't too expensive and I think it would be easier for me to use than a self-timer (I just can't pose and look good in ten seconds!). :)

  3. I rarely take selfies, as I much prefer taking photos of just about ANYTHING else! But when I do take self portraits I usually set a timer or turn the camera around a "shoot" myself. If I had the extra monies for a tripod I would totally invest in one, but alas my novel has not been published, among other jazz! ;)

    1. I'm exactly the same way! Photos of myself are the hardest--probably because I'm my worst critic. :) My dad has an old tripod that works with my camera so I'm going to have to dig it out of the closet someday and try playing around with it and my self-timer!

    1. Oh, no worries. Outfit posts are definitely hard--that's why I don't do them anymore! The ones that I've seen you do are super cute, though. :)

  5. Hehe, but "camera in front of the mirror" shots are fun! But yes, I know what you mean, though - they can get old and I feel so vain taking them! :D Well, I have a sister who likes to pick up the camera and do some photos, so I guess I have it a little bit easy! I just tell her "I need new blog photos of myself!!" and we go do a photo shoot. My mom, affectionately nicknamed "Media Mom," also is a big documenter of the family life, so I get pictures from her stuff, too...and of course, NONE of this is helping you at all. I'd say try the remote or a timer, although when I try that, I run into focus issues, since I'm not able to focus on ME in the picture, since I'm the one behind the camera...but perhaps a remote would help with that instead? I don't think remotes are very expensive, so give it a try and gral, let me know!

    1. Ah, I would love to have a sister to do photoshoots with! I try and convince my sisters every now and then but something always comes up that prevents us from doing one. Someday, though! I'm pretty much the camera girl in the family, so sometimes I feel a little jipped in the photo-area. But I love my family nonetheless! :)

I get what you mean about the timer, too! Focusing is so hard with that. I definitely need to practice!

And after reading everyone's comments, I am seriously thinking about getting a remote. I think it would be a ton of fun for parties (i.e. photobooths) and I've heard they're pretty cheap, too!

    1. I definitely will! Reflection photos are definitely my default self-portrait technique so it'll definitely be a push for me to try something new! :)

Did you ever end up getting a remote? I am looking at getting one too and was wondering if you had any tips :)

    1. Sorry it took me so long to respond! But no, I haven't gotten a remote yet. Still looking for one, in fact! Partially because I haven't had a lot of time to search for one until now and because I'm still saving up for a remote and lens. :) Have you found one (or a company) that you like yet? I'd love to hear about your search! At this rate, you'll probably end up with one before me! :)
