let me teach you something.

daytwo
wouldn't you trust some advice from a girl who holds kids while swinging? that's multitasking at its best, friends.

It's Day 2 of Jenni's Blog Everyday in May and today's prompt is to teach you guys something that I know a lot about or something that I'm good at.

Unfortunately, this one stumped me so instead of writing about something that I'm actually good at, I decided on something that I'm sorta good at. And no, I'm not teaching you how to score a date, be a successful blogger, or earn lots of money because we all know none of those things are true in my life right now.

But let's continue. One thing I do know a lot about is how to get a preschooler (or little kid) to like you. Having been a student teacher and volunteer in at least four different preschool settings (and having worked with preschoolers since sixth grade) has left me with a little wisdom that I'd like to impart on you. And because I know that you're all dying to know how to get on the good side of the little kids in your life, you're welcome ahead of time.

*Please note that I wrote "little kids in your life" because I'm not a proponent of teaching kids to talk to strangers.*

You should also know that I'm not a mom or a teacher currently, so I'm not an expert. I just have some experience, which should not be confused with expertise!

Let's continue. Here are a few tricks of the trade that I've learned from experience and from teachers I've met and worked with over the years:

Sing, dance, play, repeat. Kids don't judge. They love it when you sing loudly, dance around like a monkey, play tag with them (let them win every now and then, though!), and do it often. Kids love it when you play with them--so don't just sit back and watch them, play with them. I promise you won't regret one minute of it.

Act ridiculous and say silly things. No matter what you do, if you look silly, kids are going to laugh. And laughter is one of the easiest ways to get kids to like you and want to sit in your lap.

Don't be too forward. Just like on a date (or my hypothetical dates), don't get in their face. Kids are curious and love making new friends but need time to observe and get to know you. If there's anything I've learned from meeting kids, it's to give them plenty of time to warm up to you and your silly self.

Ask them about their shoes. If they're girls, they'll probably show you their glittery flats that'll make you wish you had feet their size (kids clothes are cute, amiright?). If they're boys, they'll likely stomp their feet to show you how their shoes light up. Oh, and preschoolers (or kids of any age) will want to show off how fast they can run in their shoes, so bring that up too while you're at it.

Treat them like big kids. Preschoolers (and kids of all ages) want to be treated older than they really are. So treat them like the big kids they really aren't. Then you'll be considered cool in their book.

So what are your tips for working with, raising, or having fun with kids? Kids and teaching are two of my biggest passions so I'm always open to learning more about those cute people!

  1. I love these ideas, they are so sweet, and so true. Especially about giving them space. I used to hate when people would crowd me as a kid.

I love the proverb, we used it at our wedding on the guestbook table. SO true, too!

but my favorite part: *Please note that I wrote "little kids in your life" because I'm not a proponent of teaching kids to talk to strangers.*

    You are awesome.

    1. I was definitely one of those kids who needed her space, too! Well, I take that back, I'm STILL one of those kids who needs her space!

And yes, that verse from Proverbs is now one of my faves. I have to admit, when I first read your comment, I had no idea what you were talking about!

And thanks girl, I can't wait to read yours (you participated, right?) because it takes someone who's awesome to know someone who's awesome! :)

  2. Great post! I work with kids too ( I volunteer at a gym daycare, and I'm a sub ed. assistant at an elementary) and I totally agree! On all your points, but definitely with the shoes! We all love our shoes :)

Found you through the link-up! Happy to be a new follower :)

  3. I laughed out loud at *Please note that I wrote "little kids in your life" because I'm not a proponent of teaching kids to talk to strangers.*

And I am constantly wishing that they made kids clothes and shoes in my size! Those sparkly princess tutu dresses that come with a wand.. I would look GOOD in one of those!

I'm so glad I've found your blog!

    1. It's only the truth! :) I also had to say that because I still am a little wary around strangers (or people who I think look like they could fit the "stranger danger" description).

And I know, little kids have the cutest clothes. Seeing their clothes definitely doesn't help my baby fever!

    1. That's so funny because I feel the same way you do except with teens! For some reason (even though I was one a few years ago) teens scare me; probably due to all of the middle and high school drama. :) But thank goodness for ladies like you who know how to speak their language and love on them! :)

    1. Kids love their shoes, don't they? Then again, if I get a new pair of shoes, I feel and act the same way! Except the running part, I'm not too keen at showing people how I run. :)
