PASS IT ON.

blogtemberdaythree
Pass on some useful advice or information you learned and always remembered.

I was in the car with my sisters the other day. We were listening to Fun!; with the windows down low and the music on high.

Somewhere in between the song changes, my little sister brought up the idea of trying out for something at her school. The next thing I know that leaves my mouth is "Well, you'll never know unless you try."

The moment those words left my mouth, I felt like a mother or a teacher, both are things I dream of becoming someday, but I had no idea those words would be leaving my mouth as a twenty-something big sister.

The conversation continued, my older sister and younger sister continued talking and I sat back, looking at the fields of grass we whizzed by and let my own words soak into my heart.

You'll never know unless you try.

You'll never know unless you try.

Smart words, aren't they?

Smart words that I need to listen to. You'll never know unless you try. You'll never know if you like cookie dough ice cream until you try (good thing I did!). You'll never know if you'll enjoy running unless you try (a truth once again for me). You'll never know if you'll get into that school or workplace of your dreams unless you just try.

Try. Try. Try.

It's worth it, isn't it?

  1. hmmmm good words.
such a simple and often spouted out sentence - but so much depth.
you never will know unless you try it.
    hmmm...
    Thanks for sharing this Kiki

    1. I couldn't have said it better, my friend. It's funny, because those words literally slipped through my lips. Little did I know that I was the one who really needed to hear them!

  2. I am enjoying your Blogtember post and would love to join except its two days late already and I'm fearful of not following through on yet another blog challenge.

That's wonderful advice you've given to your sister. Wise indeed :)

    1. Aw, thanks Rachel! I was a little unsure if I was going to pick and choose prompts or dive all in, but I'm glad I decided to join! And you should, too! Jenni (the creator of the link-up and challenge) wrote on her blog that there's no pressure at all! I know a lot of other people who are just choosing certain prompts, so I encourage you to do the same! :)

  3. Such simple, yet powerful words. You're right, you never DO know unless you try! I tried singing, so I know I can. I tried knitting, now I know I can't :)

    1. So true! It's funny, because I hear that phrase all the time but it's rare that I let it sink into my heart and really think about how true it is. And I'm with you on the knitting thing--that's one thing I can't do either! :)

    1. Thanks, girl! Fearing failure/rejection is a huge struggle for me so I know how important it is for me to try new things and take that first step. :)

  5. It may be a simple, well-known phrase, but it's great advice and holds such truth. I've always loved it :)

    1. Amen to that! It's definitely full of truth and I especially love how that phrase doesn't say anything about what may result from trying because it gives me just the right amount of confidence to give it a try (and enough courage to say no to fear!). :)

  7. Good post, girl!! I'm the cautious one here, always skeptical that something can't happen or wont be achieved. But really, even if it ends in failure...failure in and of itself only comes by personal neglect, laziness or some other negative character trait. Whereas the failure to perhaps reach a goal is never failure when you pursued it with everything you had to offer, giving it your best shot. Trying something new. That's never failure.

I've been sort of beating myself up today over having to move home (refer to blog post), feeling like somehow I failed the moving out on my own thing, that I disappointed all the people who believed in me. When really, moving home was sort of taken out of my hands by forced beyond my own control. When really, I was a success at living on my own - I did it! I paid for my life, I planned my day, I bought and cooked my own food...and in the long run, found out a lot about myself, as well as, in a sense, finding out who "Kellie" might really be. Just because my faithful job had to let me go all those months ago and the job I was able to land didn't pay the same doesn't reflect on my ability to do the whole independent living. It just means...things got tight and things got hard. Beyond my control.

And now I've been rambling, but all that to say...thanks for this!! I sort of needed it. :)

    1. Oh Kellie, don't you know that your comments are the bestest ones this girl could ever ask for? :)

I, too, am a cautious and skeptical one, an over-thinker, and often one who won't try things because I don't want to fail or disappoint someone. I so love your perspective on failure--it's one I need to pick up and pass on to others! Seriously, you're so right. If we put everything we could into it, it's NOT a failure. Not at all. It was a success; maybe not in the way we (or the world) sees fit, but it was a success because we tried.

I need to catch up on your blog girl! I'll be sure to stop by sometime this weekend. Based on what you wrote though, I want you to know that YOU DID NOT FAIL! I felt like I did when I moved back home from the dorms when I was in college. But like you said, I learned a lot about myself and what it's like to "live on my own" (even if I didn't really). I learned about me and most importantly, who I can and should rely on (God first and family second).

Thank you for teaching me, girl! I so appreciate your encouraging, insightful words + honesty. Hugs! :)

  8. Wise words my friend! Easier to give advice than to actually follow it, huh? I wish I good just let go and follow my own advice sometimes. Maybe one day... :)

    1. You said it! Those are definitely words that I need to hear and live by more often in my life. Why is it that things like this are always easier said than done? :)
