In August, the Pacific Northwest likes to get hot (especially this summer!). And I've said it again, and will continue to say it, but I can be a total wimp when it comes to hot weather. My family likes to call it "wilting" and I couldn't agree more. So when it's hot outside, we drive out to the beach--one of our favorite family daytrips.

We took photos of seagulls (while my dog barked at them like always), made rock towers, watched a bald eagle and it's mate, checked out the tide pools, hung out around an old bonfire spot, and climbed on some drift wood, too. Somedays call for being unplugged from technology and plugged into the present (and nature!) and this was one of those days.

And it was a good day at that.

How do you spend your summer days when it's too hot out? Are you a beach person or a pool person?

  2. Beaches all the way. However, the beaches look a whole lot different- no cliffs- on the East Coast.

  3. the nearest beach is several hours away, so i have to be a pool person. [but i'm a beach person nonetheless.] these pictures are beautiful!

and yay for switching to disqus! :)

  4. Fun!!!! I would love to spend my whole summer living at the beach! Since that is not the case, I'm happy to get to any pool, river, or clean lake that I can. A day on the water is just GOOD when the heat settles in.

  5. I would be curious as to what is hot there ;)
this week's highs are 96, 97, 99, 101, and something else that makes my insides melt (with 100% humidity mind you...BLEHK)
I love y'alls beach! it is so different from the beaches over here on the east coast.
when it is as hot as it is here, I might brave some time over at the pool, or go out to my grandparents dock on the river, or head to the beach....but I've got to be honest, when it gets this hot we do a lot of indoor activity!

  6. This looks amazing! What a gorgeous beach :-) There is no such thing as too hot for me...it drives my husband crazy because he totally wilts in the heat, and I'm extra chipper and only ever want to be outside! I would choose the beach over the pool though, if we had one nearby!

  8. Unplugging is so refreshing, isn't it? I'm glad you got a chance to unplug this weekend! :)

  9. My thoughts exactly! There's something about the beach that really makes you soak in the sunshine (or fog over here!) and really take in God's creation. :)

  10. Oh, no! I often forget that a lot of my blog friends don't have close access to the ocean. You'll just have to come visit me! :)

And I know! I'm still getting used to all things Disqus, but so far, so good!

  11. My thoughts exactly. :) There's something about the great outdoors that quite literally ends up taking my breath away!

  12. That would be sooo much fun. We've spent weekends at the coast and have gone hiking, letterboxing, and beachcombing and it's a lot of fun. I'm hoping we get a chance to do that next year.

I'm not a huge pool person, but I do love rivers and CLEAN lakes (so agree with you on that part!). :)

  13. Hot here is like 85+ degrees out (this week it's supposed to get to the 90's again). So it's definitely not as humid or hot as you (although we've had wayyyy more humidity than normal and it's probably not bad for you, but for me it's terrrrrrrible, haha).

And PLEASE COME VISIT MY SIDE OF THE COAST! I would so love to show you around. And I know you already know that, but still.

And I so understand liking the indoors (with AC!) when it gets hot. I pretty much turn into a hermit during afternoons!

  14. It really is! The coast is beautiful over here. And you are one tough girl because I'm a total wimp when it comes to the heat. :)

Oh, and I agree with you, beaches are definitely better than pools. :)

  15. I know, right? I love being able to spend the day at the beach--especially when it's pretty empty like the one we went to!

  16. I really want to try letterboxing! I need to look into some in my area. :)
Summer hobbies are great. I hope next summer is full of yours too!!!

Lakes must be clean! I'm glad we agree.

  20. You should try it! You do need some paper + a rubber stamp/ink pad, though. Let me know if you ever try it!

  26. Love these pictures!! I love unplugged weekends!! Also I LOVE the pacific northwest!! One of my favorite parts of the country! I don't handle the heat that well - I much prefer cool/cold weather. I love the beach, but I won't lie, I'm sort of afraid of the water...

    ReplyDelete
  27. Ah! I love your rock tower! That is fun. I wish Oklahoma had a beach.... That's what I get for living in the MIDDLE of the country :)

  28. I don't know how I missed your comment--sorry about that! I'm obviously still getting used to Disqus. :)

And unplugged weekends are the best, especially when it involves being outside in the cooler weather. I'm most definitely not a fan of big open water, but I love just walking along the beach and enjoying the sunshine. Well, that, and the water's too cold to get in!

  29. My sisters and I were having rock tower contests and unfortunately, I can't claim that one to be mine (I'm still an amateur at it, haha).

And I take the beach for granted wayyy too much, I forget that not everyone has access to the ocean! You'll just have to come out and visit it (and me!). :)
